Mok is currently Singapore’s fastest runner over the 5k, half marathon and full marathon distances. Over the past year, he has broken his PBs in the 10k, clocking 31:55 at the NIttaidai 10k time trials, half marathon with a time of 1:07:29 at the Christchurch Airport Half Marathon and the full marathon, finishing the Gold Coast Airport Marathon in 2:26:30. All these while balancing his training with his full time job as a doctor. In 2013, Mok became the first male athlete to win the gold medal in the marathon event at the SEA Games since 1983. He is also the only Singaporean to hold multiple SEA Games gold medals across different sports, having won his first in 2007 in the triathlon event. Next up for him is the upcoming Commonwealth Games in July this year but his ultimate goal is to become the nation’s first male Olympic marathoner at Rio in 2016.
Dr Derek is a household name in the local endurance community. When he isn’t out clocking miles along East Coast Parkway, he can be found practising medicine as a general practitioner with Raffles Medical Group. Though Derek is relatively new to the endurance running scene, he has had more than 10 years of triathlon experience with numerous podium finishes in local as well as regional events. Since switching his attention to running, he has racked up several credible results with a recent PB-breaking performance at the 2014 Boston Marathon, clocking a time of 2:42:01. With his medical training, he has knowledge in the physiological as well as biomechanics aspects of running and that has helped him to stay injury free as well as plan his training and races accordingly. His aim is to be one of the top 3 local athletes at this year’s Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore and hopefully qualify for the 2015 SEA Games.
